about

The (mostly) true story of my search for a pint of cask-conditioned Brains Special Ale in Cardiff, Wales, armed only with a CAMRA 'Good Beer Guide' and an umbrella, back in the day before navigation by phone was a thing. 1983, to be precise. As I remember, the beer was well worth the cold, damp search. And yes, a chair really did go flying across the pub!

lyrics

Once I went walking on a cold April night
Through the dark streets of Cardiff in search of a pint.
I saw in the distance a sign very clear -
A pub: it was open and Brains was served there.

I opened the door and stepped up for a drink;
Some eyes were turning and with no time to think
I quickly sat down and I kept my head low.
The beer tasted good as I watched the show.

As one glass was shattered another was drained
Through the laughs and the curses disinterest I feigned
A Welsh dragon breathing a fire down my back
Lost and alone with a Brains Skull Attack

Through the cigarette haze and the fruit machine glare
Pint glasses were flying and so was a chair.
The barmaid was sweeping up shards towards the drain
That emptied out blood and a river of Brains.

Young lads take a warning and lasses the same:
Too many pints and you won’t know your name,
You’ll find yourself lost on the old Newport Road
Wet from the rain with a head set to explode.
